“Let us be frank, Mr. Ozanam; let us also be very particular. What do you do besides talk to prove the faith you claim is in you?” This challenge, uttered by a fellow student at the University of Sorbonne, spurred Frédéric Ozanam into action. Frédéric and a friend began to visit the Paris tenements in order to help however they could. During this time of the birth of the industrial revolution, the number of people who lacked the necessities of life increased greatly. Low wages and long working hours resulted in appalling living conditions. Disease and violence were rampant. Soon a group formed around Frédéric dedicated to address these conditions. This little band expanded rapidly over France and around the world, even in Frédéric’s lifetime. It continues today, seeing and serving God in the poor, as the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
