I have begun a project to travel and paint much of the Old Spanish Trail. This trail consists of 4 separate branches that originate in Santa Fe, New Mexico with completion at San Gabriel, California. This served as a trade route to the coast from 1829 until 1848.
This painting was made on the Colorado side of the border with Utah, a few miles south of I-70. This is Castle Rock, a major landmark on the trail. The Gunnison Survey Party travelled this route in 1859 and their survey artist sketched this same rock. I love being present in landscapes that connect me to history and feeling the spirit alive in such places.
