Driving along a very marginal road on the South edge of the Missouri River in Montana, I randomly came across this view. Searching maps, I discovered this was a very famous crossing by Chief Josephina and the Nez Perce tribe on their desperate escape route, 1200 miles from Oregon in an attempt to reach safety in Canada.
This is Cow Crossing, where there was a skirmish between the tribe and a small group of soldiers guarding supplies on September 23, 1877. A little more than a week later, October 5, 1877, just 40 miles shy of the border, they were surrounded by troops and defeated at The Battle of Bear Paw.
