In 1531, Our Lady appeared in Mexico to a peasant named Juan Diego. She called herself “The Mother of the True God that Gives Life.” She appeared as a Mexican Indian princess and asked Juan to tell the Bishop to build a church where she appeared. The Bishop asked for a sign that she was from God. In response, she made roses bloom in mid-winter and then arranged them in Juan's tilma to take to the Bishop. They weren't just any roses though – they were dark pink Castillion roses, that only grew in the Bishop's home back in Spain. When Juan released the roses, the Bishop fell to his knees.
He was overwhelmed not only by the personal roses, but by the image of Mary as Juan had seen her that was imprinted on the cloth of the tilma. The church was built and millions were converted. Many, many miracles have taken place in connection with the image and the tilma is still preserved in the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City. Modern science cannot figure out to this day how the image was made and why it has not turned to dust centuries ago. As the world continually reaches for God, Our lady of Guadalupe has become known as the star of the new evangelization.
Her feast day is December 12.
