Near the hill at Tepeyac, Juan Diego (his Aztec name, Cuautlatohuac) opens his tilma (his workers cloak) to show Bishop Zumarraga the gift the lady had given him. These were roses growing miraculously in December. The lady’s special request made in his native Nahuatl language, arranged by her in his tilma, was to prove to the bishop that she had visited Juan and asked that a church be built on Tepeyac. It is the exact moment the bishop observed the real miracle: as the roses fell away, Mary’s image was on the tilma!
Tepeyac had been the Aztec site of a temple for the Goddess Tonantzin (Nahuatl for ‘Our Mother’). Mary appeared here as an Aztec woman, as someone they might know. Her stance on a burnt crescent moon revealed the old ways were replaced. Juan’s tilma, made of agave fiber, measures 170cm x 104cm. This fiber usually disintegrates after several years, but nearly 500 years later, it is still intact. In 1791, silversmiths working on the frame around the image spilled nitric acid over the cloak; in 1921 a fanatic tried to blow it up, yet it still remains. Tests reveal the image is not made of paint. Guadalupe has the dark skin of an Aztec, yet her features are mestizo, a blend of EuropeanIndian. Her black sash is an Aztec symbol of pregnancy. The stars on her robe are the constellations in the sky that very December night. In her striking eyes, the reflections of the bishop and others are seen at the moment of revelation. This multi-layered miracle offered hope, new faith and conversion to millions of devastated souls.
Her feast day is December 12.
