St. Benedict is believed to have been born around 480, as the son to a Roman noble of Norcia and the twin to his sister, Scholastica.
Monte Cassino is a rocky hill southeast of Rome, in the Latin Valley, Italy, to the west of the town of Cassino. It is the site of the Roman town of Casinum and best known for its abbey, the first house of the Benedictine Order, having been established by Benedict of Nursia himself around 529. It was for the community of Monte Cassino that the Rule of Saint Benedict was composed.
His feast day is July 11.
