John became a Carmelite priest at age 25. Saint Teresa of Avila persuaded him to attempt to reform his order to a stricter observance of their rule. The Carmelites resisted his reforms, and though ordered to return to Medina, he refused, resulting in his imprisonment at Toledo, Spain. He escaped after nine months. Eventually his efforts revitalized the Order. His great contemplative and spiritual writings led to his designation as a Doctor of the Church in 1926.
"Do not feed your spirit on anything apart from God.
Cast away all cares and let peace and reconciliation fill your heart."
--St. John of the Cross
Spain, 1542-1591.
His feast day is December 14.
