In the same Native village where Isaac Jogues, Rene Goupil and John LaLande were killed ten years earlier, Kateri Tekakwitha was born to a Mohawk chief and an Algonquin christian woman. She was only four when most of her village was wiped out by small pox, leaving her with weak eyesight and a pock mocked face. The survivors moved to a new village nearby and Kateri continued to grow up in the Mohawk tradition. They lived in a long house, hunted, fished and grew corn, beans and squash. Kateri loved to be in the forest where she could see and feel the presence of the Creator her people talked about.
When missionaries came to teach the Gospel, she recognized in their words the love she already knew but now she knew His name, Jesus. She embraced His word and became a Christian. Her people did not agree with her new Christian ways, so she fled to Canada to live in 'The Village of Praying Indians.” She became so close to God that those around her could feel her holiness. When she died of disease, her sickly pock marked face became beautiful and radiant, many miracles followed when people prayed for her intercession.
Her feast day is July 14.
