In this time of rising anti-Semitism, it is important to remember that the horrors of the Holocaust occurred not that long ago. Though Jews were, by far, the largest population persecuted by the Nazis, other victims included Poles, Roma (Gypsies), Soviet prisoners of war, mentally and physically handicapped persons, homosexuals, and religious opponents of Nazism.
Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish priest who died in Auschwitz, on August 14, 1941. After a prisoner had escaped from the concentration camp, ten others were selected to be killed by starvation as punishment for the escape. As the ten condemned men were being led off, one of them started to cry that he would never see his wife or children again. Father Kolbe volunteered to take his place. During two weeks of dehydration and starvation, Father Kolbe comforted the others and led them in prayer. Eventually he was the only one who remained alive. He calmly accepted the lethal injection of carbolic acid the guards administered to hasten his death.
His feast day is August 14.
