Isabel Flores de Oliva was born in Lima, Peru to a Puerto Rican father and a native Peruvian mother. Everyone called her Rose because she was so beautiful. She was given many mystical gifts by Jesus. Though the severe penances she gave Him in return would be excessive by today's standards, during Rose's time and in her culture, they were heroic and holy expressions of the overwhelming love she felt for God. She was also very devoted to His blessed mother, to whom she poured out her heart and entrusted decisions. She is often pictured wearing a crown of beautiful roses, but underneath was a crown of thorns she wore to honor the sacrifice of her beloved Jesus.
The fruits of the Holy Spirit bloomed as abundantly in her life as the roses she wore. Rose consecrated herself to God, but she didn't enter a convent because her family needed her help to support itself. In her generosity, she stayed home and worked hard, doing fine needlework and growing flowers to sell while wearing the habit of a third order Dominican. Her charity extended beyond her family as well when she opened a medical clinic for the poor Peruvian natives. She built a small hut in the garden where she worked and prayed. As her reputation for holiness spread, people came from all over to sit in her garden and listen to her spiritual advice. Those who knew Rose said her eyes sparkled and her face glowed when she talked about God.
Her feast day is August 23.
