Isidore and his wife Maria worked on a farm near Madrid. They were ordinary Spanish peasants who spent their entire lives in one place. Isidore was fond of visiting churches when he had free time, and probably made the rounds of the many chapels in his area on a frequent basis. Isidore and Maria lost their first child when the baby fell into a well and drowned. At another time, Maria doubted Isidore’s fidelity -- though her fears turned out to be groundless. They lived to an old age, sharing the joys and sorrows common to most married couples throughout the world.
Wherever Spanish Catholicism has spread, these saints are considered the patrons of farm workers. This icon was painted for farm workers in central California and Maria is holding representative crops from that region.
Their feast day is May 15.
