On July 24, 1985, Father Ezechiele Ramin, MCCJ, was ambushed near the town of Cacoal in the Amazon Valley of Brazil by seven hired gunmen who riddled his body with more than fifty bullets. He was returning from a meeting with poor farmers in danger of being attacked, and had encouraged them to seek a resolution through peaceful means. The turtle dove on his left hand in this icon symbolizes his belief in non-violence.
It was his identification with the homeless and landless peasants in the Brazilian interior that made him a marked man. “Justice” in much of Latin America is often administered by death squads, hired by landowners who destroy anyone who opposes them. Ezechiele was the fifth priest to be killed in Brazil in the early 1980’s because the Catholic Church had openly sided with poor families in their struggle for justice and equality in land distribution.
This icon was commissioned by the students and faculty of the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, where Ezechiele studied to be a priest for the Comboni Missionaries. It was blessed on the twentieth anniversary of this martyr’s death.
