This image shows Mary bringing the Infant Jesus into Brooklyn via the Brooklyn Bridge. Brooklyn is a borough of New York City filled with excitement, challenges, fun, turbulence, transition, and cultural and religious diversity.
Mary is a role model for Brooklyn and the world. She was open, reflective, contemplative, receptive, humble, strong, and fully present to her son, Jesus, throughout His life but especially at the foot of the cross. She experienced pregnancy, travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, flight into Egypt, return to Nazareth, the wedding at Cana, people calling Jesus mad, the Last Supper, and being with all the apostles and others in the upper room when Jesus appeared after His resurrection. Throughout all these experiences, Mary’s Faith and Devotion to God the Father never wavered, but only got stronger. She continually pondered and reflected on what was asked of her by God and responded in humility and love with, “Here I am the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.”
Like Mary, the people of Brooklyn are known for their spirit, grit and Faith. The presence of Jesus and His Mother brings additional peace, tranquility, healing and hope to all people of Brooklyn and the world.
Our Lady of Brooklyn is dedicated to all the past and present Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn who, as a Congregation, have served Brooklyn with Mary-like Faith and Devotion for 160 years. Especially recognized is Brother Joseph Mussa, OSF, for whom Our Lady of Brooklyn is an apparition of the heart.
