Santo Domingo was a 13th century Castilian Augustinian priest who founded a new order, the Dominicans, to combat the Albigensian heresy. According to one legend the Virgin Mary appeared to Domingo and gave him the rosary as an aid in contemplative prayer. The popularity of the rosary spread throughout Europe and the rest of the world and continues today. The Dominicans are known as the “dogs of God”, a play on the Latin “domini canes.”
In New Mexico the Native Pueblo of Santo Domingo was named in honor of this saint and was the seat of the Inquisition during colonial times. Santo Domingo is the patron of the rosary and of astronomers.
His feast day is August 8.
