Born in Manila in the Philippines, Lorenzo Ruiz was the son of a Filipino mother and a Chinese father. He was raised to be a devout Catholic who married a woman named Rosario and had two sons and a daughter. He was fluent in Spanish and worked as a translator and calligrapher. When accused of a crime he did not commit, Lorenzo did not trust that he would get a fair trial, so he boarded a ship he thought was headed for China, with three Dominican priests and a leper.
The ship was actually headed for Japan, where Christianity was outlawed. Lorenzo and his companions were immediately arrested and ordered to recant their faith. They were imprisoned for two years. The group was then taken to the city of Nagasaki to be tortured and killed. In spite of the horrible things Lorenzo was forced to endure, he never gave up his faith. His last words were “I am a Catholic and whole heartedly do accept death for God. If I had a thousand lives, all of these to Him I shall offer. Do with me as you please.”
His feast day is September 28.
