The touching story of the Moabite woman Ruth is a powerful reminder of the universality of God’s grace and favor. Ruth bound herself to the Israelite people by an oath to her mother-in-law Naomi, returning with Naomi to her mother-in-law’s ancestral lands after Naomi’s husband and sons died in Moab. The Book of Ruth in the Hebrew Scriptures recounts how Ruth’s loyalty and generosity are blessed by God and lead to her marriage to Boaz. Through this union, she became the great-grandmother of David and thus an ancestor of Jesus.
These beautiful words attributed to Ruth are often part of the wedding liturgy:
“Wherever you go I will go, wherever you lodge I will lodge.
Your people shall be my people and your God, my God.
Where you die I will die, and there be buried.
May the LORD do thus to me, and more, if even death separates me from you!”
Her feast day is November 1.
